Truth & Reconciliation Day

Orange Magnet Project ~ Seven Sacred Teachings

Established in 2013 by Phyllis Webstad, Orange Shirt Day recognizes the legacy of the Residential Schools System for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit families and communities. By wearing orange, we acknowledge the truths of Residential Schools in Canada, we honour Survivors, and we remember the thousands of children murdered by these schools, many of them buried in unmarked graves.                         Urban Indigenous Education Centre

Grade 9 Visual Arts students of 2021 and 2022, have created powerful multimedia artworks that demonstrate how they promote these Seven Sacred Teachings in their own lives. The students dedicated themselves not only in their artwork, but also by creating, cutting and assembling close to 1000 magnets for the students and staff at Harbord. Experience the exhibit below and let us continue to promote kindness and understanding through the dedicated practice of the Seven Sacred Teachings.

Mr. Tiberio ~ Visual Arts Teacher

Anishinaabe Education is founded upon the very important Seven Sacred Teachings. These fundamental teachings include Love, Courage, Wisdom, Humility, Respect, Honesty and Truth. Concepts that were never taught in Residential Schools. If the century old system of Residential Schools did not exist, Indigenous youth would have learned these these important lessons by the ones who loved and cared for them, their parents and families.
